A Case Study for Wastewater Treatment: Sharjah

LOCATION: GEFS, SHARJAH, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

SUMMARY

GEFS are a large scale waste water service provider within the UAE. Their operations in Hamriyah were experiencing difficulty treating varying types of waste water entering the facility. Hydro Industries therefore engineered and procured a solution by installing three Hydro 400 units on to the site.

BACKGROUND

The throughput of varied waste water streams negatively impacted the ability of the existing biological treatment plant to operate efficiently and provide water treated to the required standards. Increased suspended solids, oil, grease, chemical and biological oxygen demand were all limiting factors. Increases in the aforementioned parameters resulted in oxygen starvation to the biological plant rendering the bacteria inactive, this subsequently resulted in the inability of nitrates and ammonia to be removed.

HYDRO'S SOLUTION

Hydro Industries therefore engineered and procured a solution by installing three Hydro 400 units on to the site and constructing settlement systems and sludge pumping to fit in with existing infrastructure. Due to the climate of the region Hydro ensured all systems were appropriately protected in buildings housed with air conditioning, for consistent operation of the systems and welfare facilities for operators. The electrocoagulation systems were able to remove the inhibiting parameters allowing the GEFS system to achieve the irrigation water quality treated water standards set by the Sharjah authority. The units treat water at a flow rate ranging from 60m3/hour to 120m3/hour providing a solution to the problem and enabling the GEFS system to operate without issue. These systems operate on a continual basis ensuring constant and continual treatment quality. Due to the success of this project, roll out is planned for GEFS sites across the Sharjah region with potential opportunities for instalment across the UAE.
